Opened: 20th July, 1846.

Kilmarnock Station originally had six platforms: two bays at the north end which remain in use, a disused bay at the south end, a 'down' main platform, and an island platform on the 'up' side serving the 'up' main and loop lines. Between the 'up' and 'down' through platforms were four tracks: two platform lines and two through lines. The 'down' through line has now been removed, leaving three tracks only. Immediately to the south of the station the line crosses the centre of Kilmarnock on a large viaduct. To the north of the station is the junction for the lines to Barrhead, Dalry and Troon. The lines to Barrhead and Troon remain open, but the original GPK&AR main line to Dalry is closed and lifted. The line to Troon is a newer connecting line to the original Kilmarnock and Troon Railway which terminated in Kilmarnock at St. Marnocks, to the west of the present station.
